A Power Hungry NATION
Power is among the most critical components of infrastructure, crucial for the economic growth and welfare of nations. The existence and development of adequate power infrastructure is essential for sustained growth of the Bharat’s economy. The fundamental principle of Bharat’s power industry has been to provide universal access to affordable power in a sustainable way. The Ministry of Power has made significant efforts over the past few years to turn the country from one with a power shortage to one with a surplus by establishing a single national grid, fortifying the distribution network, and achieving universal household electrification.
Bharat is the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity worldwide, with an installed power capacity of 423.25 GW as of July 31, 2023.
Bharat's power generation witnessed its highest growth rate in over 30 years in FY23. Power generation in Bharat increased by 8.87% to 1,624.15 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in FY23.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates Bharat’s Power requirement will grow to reach 817 GW by 2023 out of which 500 GW would be from renewables. So, we are talking of DOUBLING the power capacity in just 7yrs.
Bharat is the world's third-largest energy consumer after China and the United States. It is also the most rapidly rising energy consumer. The main factors driving the yearly increase in Power are the expanding economy and population.
More people, more cities, more power
Demand for electricity have increased by 30 per cent, partly because of population growth and partly because more of the people who live today without electricity will be connected. Population growth in urban areas will increase thus creating more cities and urbanization.
With urbanization comes more infrastructure. New city dwellers need homes, workplaces, hospitals, schools and transport.
Reliable power sources are vital for improving the quality of life for citizens. Access to electricity enables better healthcare facilities by powering hospitals with medical equipment and refrigeration units for storing vaccines and medicines. It also enhances education opportunities through electrified schools that can provide digital learning tools and resources.
Connecting the world with technology
The pace of technological change is getting faster. Computers that a generation ago would fill a room now sit in our pockets. As computers have shrunk, so their processing power has increased, and the internet has allowed them to connect with each other. The next phase, the Internet of Things, means connecting cars, buildings and many other appliances. In the future, more cities will be ‘smart’ cities, taking advantage of connected devices to move people and goods more speedily and provide services more efficiently.
In the city of the future, you might speak to your smartwatch to call for a cab. The car, a self-driving electric vehicle, arrives within moments and uses GPS to find your destination automatically. While you tend to emails on your smartphone from the back seat, the car speeds you on your way without traffic jams because the city’s sensors are monitoring traffic flow in real time and using algorithms to crunch the data and reroute vehicles to avoid delays. Sensors embedded in parking bays will give live information about where to find a space.
All of this requires power, of course: your smartwatch and smartphone, the car and the satellite it uses to get GPS coordinates, the sensors around the city and the data center the city uses to analyze traffic flows. In fact, the technology boom and our increased global connections are reliant on data centers, which will be important drivers of power demand in the future.
Make In Bharat Theme
Industries require a consistent and uninterrupted supply of electricity to operate efficiently. Power-intensive sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and infrastructure development heavily rely on a stable energy source to drive their operations.
More Manufacturing means More Power as all machines and factories are the most power-hungry units of any nation. China itself consumed 8637 TWh in 2022 which is double of USA. As Make in Bharat theme is spread out across Bharat with various states participating and competing, Power is the key ingredient. Efficient electricity supply is an important prerequisite for aiding sustained agricultural and industrial growth to any economy, Make in Bharat is such a theme which participates in Bharat’s economy growth through industrialization.
Over the past few decades, Bharat has experienced impressive GDP growth rates, making it one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. This economic expansion has led to increased energy consumption and a greater need for resources to sustain this growth trajectory.
Furthermore, Bharat's strategic geographic location also contributes to its desire for power. Situated at the crossroads of major trade routes and neighboring countries with geopolitical complexities, Bharat recognizes that securing energy resources and maintaining regional influence are crucial for its national security and stability.
Additionally, as a developing nation with ambitious goals, Bharat aims to assert itself as a global player across various sectors such as technology, defence, space exploration, and renewable energy. To achieve these aspirations, power is essential.
In conclusion, Bharat's hunger for power stems from various factors including its large population base, rapid economic growth trajectory, strategic geographic location, and aspirations of becoming a global player across multiple sectors. As Bharat continues on this path towards greater influence and prosperity, it will be interesting to witness how it balances its power aspirations with its commitment to global cooperation and sustainable development.
POWER IS THE FUTURE.
